Auszeichnung Klimaanpassung Climatic Adaption Award

Klimawäldchen am Wollhausplatz, Heilbronn

■ Ein Pop-up-Wäldchen am Verkehrsknoten punkt Wollhausplatz! Das Grün fl ächenamt Heil bronn hat Faszinierendes geleistet: Inmitten der Innenstadt ist nach Abbruch von zwei Pavillons eine Tiefgaragen fl äche mit Bäumen und Sträu chern bep fl anzt worden. Für die 800 Quadratmeter große, von hohem Ver kehrsaufkommen geprägte Fläche gab es 2019 noch keine Planungen für eine dauerhafte Folge nutzung. Das Grün fl ächenamt übernahm die Re gie und führte einen amtsinternen Wettbewerb durch, bei dem Verena Klenske und Niklas Köppel mit der Planung eines Klimawäldchens überzeug ten – ein maximaler Kontrast zur bisherigen Flä chennutzung. Auf der Tiefgaragen fl äche wurde in kurzer Zeit ein Wald aus 200 Bäumen gep fl anzt. Die Randeinfassung aus Jutesäcken, Vlies und Kokosgewebe ermöglichte die Erdaufschüttung von 50 Zentimetern. Götterbäume, Erlen, Birken, Zitterpappeln, Fichten und auch Kiefern sitzen auf einer Baustahlmatte auf, befestigt mit Spann gurten. Zum Aufenthalt gibt es Bänke und Tische; Wassernebeldüsen unterstützen die kühlende Wir kung des Walds. Die Jury überzeugte, wie in kurzer Zeit mit einem kleinen Budget der öffentliche Raum wirkungsvoll verwandelt wurde. In einem disparaten Umfeld ist ein attraktiver Freiraum entstanden: inmitten von Beton, Asphalt und Verkehr wächst ein grüner Wald, der Schatten spendet und frische Luft pro duziert. Die Inbesitznahme des städtischen Raums zur Erholung und Entspannung, zur Sauerstoffpro duktion und Kühlung ist ein vielfach postuliertes Ziel, das hier in beispielhafter Weise umgesetzt wurde. Auch an die Folgeverwendung der Gehölze an an deren Orten der Stadt wurde gedacht. Dennoch

wünscht man dem Platz, dass er sich in eine dauerhafte Grün fl äche verwandelt und damit der Klimaanpassung nachhaltig dient sowie anderen Kommunen Mut zur Nachahmung macht. ■ Quite literally a pop-up woodland at the Woll hausplatz traf fi c junction! The Heilbronn parks department has achieved something truely fasci nating: trees and shrubs have been planted on an underground car park in the city centre following the demolition of two pavilions. By 2019, a permanent after-use had yet to be found for this 800-square-metre area character ised by high traf fi c volumes. The parks depart ment took over and held an in-house competition, which was won by Verena Klenske and Niklas Köppel’s proposal for a climate woodland – the biggest possible contrast to the then current land use. A woodland comprising 200 trees was planted on the car park within a short period of time. The edging made from hessian sacks, geo textiles and woven coir retained 50 centimetres of additional soil. Tree of heaven, alder, birch, aspen, spruce and pine sit on top of a reinforced steel mesh and are stabilised with tension belts. There are benches and tables for people to sit and pass time; jets spraying mist enhance the cooling effect of the woodland. The jury was impressed by the short time in which a public space was effectively transformed on a small budget. An attractive open space was cre ated in a disparate environment: concrete and tarmac became a green woodland that casts shade and produces fresh air. The appropriation of the urban realm for recreation and relaxation, for the production of oxygen and for cooling is a much proclaimed goal that has been implemented here in an exemplary way. Some thought has even gone into the after-use of the timber in other areas of the city. However, it would be a more fi tting outcome if this place became a permanent green space and a sustain able contribution to climate adaption as well as an example that will encourage imitation by other municipalities.
