Westpark Augsburg

Gesa Loschwitz Himmel

‘I’m almost always here‘, says the boy on the stunt scooter, who eagerly shares his skill with the other children on the Table Mountains, ‘only in the holidays I might be away for a short while.’ Even on this hot summer’s day in July, the air shimmering above the smooth concrete surface, West Park is a popular destination. The park is a success story for Augsburg. After the American forces had withdrawn, the Bavarian city seized the opportunity to reinte grate the land around the Reese, Sullivan and Sheridan barracks, which had been cut off from the city for decades. The urban planning compe tition that established a framework for the site was followed in 2005 by an open landscape archi

tecture competition in two stages. The design for West Park, composed of various park sec tions, was won by Lohaus Carl Köhlmos land scape architects. They envisioned a robust basic framework: a green edge towards the trade and housing areas and a central network of paths winding through the lawns and meadows of the entire park. The powerful design lets us perceive the entire four-kilometre-long green link as one designed unit – despite interruptions by roads and the Westfriedhof cemetery. Once the right of occupancy expires, the footpaths and cycle ways will extend across the cemetery. In the south, a green bridge connects the fl oodplain of the river Wertach across the corridor of the B17 road.

Immer wieder dienen Haine, in denen Bäume dicht an dicht wachsen, wie hier eine Insel mit Bir ken, als Animation zum Spielen. Numerous groves of densely planted trees, like this island of birch, stimulate children’s play.
