The playgrounds with their mostly natural materials blend seam lessly into the landscape of the park.

during the design stage was held without the prospec tive residents but rather with the residents of the sur rounding districts. This turned out to be an advantage, as the extensive development was viewed with mis trust by some in the existing neighbourhoods. The park became something of a conciliatory link.

The paths could be easily rerouted without changing the concept or affecting the overall impression. Initially, temporary uses that had been established in the park during the long planning phase, such as the intercul tural gardens, were easily integrated into the concept. And the designers can still respond to the desire lines of people living in the neighbourhood. They will be con nected to the network of paths. The design can be continuously adapted. This is also evident in the layout of the herbaceous planting. At the time the competition was held, it was almost inconceivable to have perennials in parks, and it was dif fi cult to implement as they were considered to require too much maintenance. In order to prove feasibility, Lohaus Carl Köhlmos, when starting the design of the actual planting, consulted Cassian Schmidt, director of the Botanical Garden of Hermannshof in Weinheim. Construction works are still going on more than 15 years after the competition: a residential and retail building is currently being built by Titus Bernhard architects on Ulmer Straße at the top end of Reese Park. The master plan was amended several times during the construc tion stage, due to a change of investor. For example, the eastern area was not developed only for commerce but also for residential use. These kinds of changes dem onstrated the strength of the design framework too.
